In their latest EP, "The Name Chapter: Temptation," K-pop group TOMORROW X TOGETHER explores "how to be seduced by the sweetness of instant gratification," as Choi Soobin describes it. Although this group is not the only group that talks about this issue recently (see: the evening of the release of the music video of Taylor Swift's "Lavender Haze" (2022) or Caroline Polachek clears the glass of wine much in his music video "Ijeri" (2022)) , TXT is qualified to talk about it. TXT proudly describes themselves as Gen Z storytellers, connecting the universal themes of longing and loneliness with the current situation. With the outbreak of COVID-19 following their 2019 debut, TXT's development has been defined as an artist from diversity and turmoil alongside the rest of their generation. This whole group portrait is based on the desire to leave the struggle of modern society as the group is looking for a lot of love. "In a world of nothing / I know you're the only one," TXT sings on his 2021 single "0X1 = Lovesong." The consensus of the coming-of-age story offered by this group is that it takes an escape that comes as personal rather than evangelistic. In a 2021 interview with NME, TXT member Choi Yeonjun said that audiences who listen to the group's shows "understand these stories as their own stories and empathize with them."
"Main Title: Temptation" shows the group more "experimental" than ever with the sense of getting lost and the pleasure of the "magical island" that was referred to during their presentation and what Next picture. And whether the audience is familiar with the history of the group or not, they can understand the accusation of "Death." The EP's music and lyrics refer to temptation stories in history: Peter Pan, the Korean story "Chunhyangjyeon", Genesis and Faust. With these literary inspirations and immersive pop sounds, the album showcases TXT's world-building musical power.
The EP opens with the cinematic track "Devil by the Window," which features soaring vocals swirling over a bass beat that allows the lyrics and music to match the music's legendary narrative. as the devil pleases him. "I scream and scream, but there is no one 'around / There is no way to escape," the members sing, again looking for comfort in this time of isolation. A trippy outing from the song describes the flight from the sky, imitating the journey of Darling children flying through the window in the story of Peter Pan, which plays as the members lift themselves up and dance music. With the title of the EP "Sugar Rush Ride", the desire exceeded the members. The fantastic music features jokes, impersonations of the devil laughing and the piercing of the voice broadcast, giving it an ASMR-like organic friendship. The payoff as the song turns into a full-on disco ballad at the end of the song is a sugar rush on its own, drawing the listener further into the world of temptation. part of the group as they sing "You are bad, you lie. " before announcing "I am a bad person".
Track 3, "Happy Stupidity" (feat. Coi Leray), highlights the band's vocals; not only are their vocals pushed to the front of the mix, but the song also has writing and production credits from all five members. In an ironic, self-deprecating tone, they dismiss the illusion of untouchability as idols, describing themselves as "the laziest Superman". The track offers a world-view look with the devilishly catchy beat of "Sugar Rush Ride" swirling into the background flute behind the band's relaxed rapping. The song is about living in time for better or worse: "There are many things to do / But there is no plan to do it," the group sings as they reject ambition and a perfect procrastination anthem. "Tinnitus (Wanna Be a Rock)" takes a sound that is common in Afro-pop, and hits it with a sense of tension that is appropriate in the song. As the fastest song of the album, it shows real problems as the band considers the loneliness and insecurity left behind after trying to party, talking about their struggles and their work as people and -make a movie. The lyrics, written by member Kang Taehyun, describe the desire for anonymity: "Rockstar takes away the stars / Just rock, okay?"
In the final song on the EP, “Farewell, Neverland,” the members resolve to leave behind a false paradise, “free falling” from their high as they decide to confront reality. Acknowledging that they will “be calling” to their love, Neverland, the closing track has a bittersweet complexity, nodding to the beauty of youthful joy rather than completely rejecting the happiness it represents. The production of this more balladic track keeps it balanced sonically with percussive guitar strums and haunting falsetto vocals lending texture to the song.
The conclusion of the EP provides closure not just on their journey through Neverland but on the obsessions TXT has become engrossed in throughout the narrative arc of their work. In an interview with J-14 magazine, member Huening Kai explained the significance of the EP being called a part of “The Name Chapter,” saying the EP “[solidified their] identity and name as [they] grow into adulthood.” Leaving behind the attitude of leaving “worries to the me of tomorrow” expressed in “Happy Fools,” the members of TXT instead choose to start to find their future selves, finding a sense of self that can’t be compromised by the promise of a sugar rush.
