Bandung Plans to Convert 'Angkot' into Microbuses

The government of Bandung plans to convert angkot, or public minivan, into microbuses for public transportation. The plan is included in the Bandung Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD) as part of infrastructure repair and development. The mayor of Bandung, Yana Mulyana said in a statement, Wednesday, January 25, 2023, "public transportation is moving forward to make people feel comfortable and safe."

The conversion plan will begin in 2024. The microbuses will become part of the Bandung Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) infrastructure.

The head of the Bandung Transportation Service, Dadang Daemawan, stated that the conversion was to optimize microbus transportation. The estimation is that a microbus can accommodate 20 passengers. While the current angkot can only carry 10 passengers. From both of this public transportation, around 20 passengers can be accommodated into one microbus," he said in his statement, Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

Dadang further stated that the proposed conversion plan would start in 2024. The government of Bandung would start to collaborate with the existing transport cooperatives. "We are proposing the operational costs from the regional budget, while the public transportation will be operated by the existing transportation cooperative," he said.

Dadang also said that in 2024, there will be a trial run for 6 rapid transit buses (BRT) routes that involve the transport cooperatives in Bandung. "This is also our effort to continue to communicate so we can prepare feeder transportation in Bandung to introduce Light rail transit (LRT) at a later time," he said.

“Jangan sampai jadi Silpa.

Twitter Said to Consider Selling User Names to Boost Revenue

Twitter has considered selling user names to generate new revenue as its owner, Elon Musk, tries to resuscitate the company’s business, two people with knowledge of the plan said.

Twitter employees have held conversations about selling some user names for the service since at least December, the people said. Engineers have discussed running online auctions where people can bid for the user names, which are the words, numbers or string of characters that follow the @ sign by which accounts are identified on the platform. Mr. Musk’s user name, for example, is @elonmusk.

It’s unclear if the project will move forward and if the plan affects all user names or only a subset, the people said. But Mr. Musk said last month that he wanted to start eliminating inactive accounts on Twitter and free up 1.5 billion user names. Only certain user names — such as those of well-known people, brands and popular names — may have value.

The social media company has been in turmoil since Mr. Musk bought it for $44 billion in October. Given the deal’s high price tag, the billionaire is under pressure to make the purchase a success.

Mr. Musk has since slashed expenses at Twitter, ordering layoffs, cutting other costs and stopping vendor payments. At the same time, he has tried finding new avenues to make money as Twitter experiences a sharp downturn in ad revenue. He has come up with a revamped subscription plan so users pay for verification badges, and the company has filed paperwork with the Treasury Department to process payments.

Inside Elon Musk’s Twitter

Mr. Musk has said he has visions of creating “an everything app,” similar to China’s WeChat, which more than a billion people use to find news, connect to friends, make payments and order food.

Unique user names — also known as handles — can be lucrative. They are often claimed by early adopters of social media platforms and some people and brands are willing to pay thousands of dollars for them. Black markets have sprung up where people can buy “original gangster,” or O.G., user names that are desired because they feature a short word or a number and may have been abandoned by their owners.

Twitter and Mr. Musk did not respond to requests for comment.

Twitter’s rules forbid the buying and selling of handles. The trade has previously attracted hackers. In 2020, a 17-year-old in Florida was arrested after hacking Twitter to obtain user names to sell, compromising the accounts of Mr. Musk and celebrities.

Telegram, a popular messaging platform, said it would let people auction their handles in October.

Four days after acquiring the company in October, Mr. Musk tweeted that he would “definitely” look to purge accounts that have been inactive for a year, some of which have coveted user names. In December, he said Twitter would free up the names of accounts that were “obvious account deletions with no tweets & no log in for years.”

His plan ignited concerns among some who feared the company would delete the accounts of people who had died and whose Twitter pages were used to memorialize them. As of July — the last time the company reported financial figures — Twitter had nearly 238 million daily active users who saw ads.

Twitter also continues to lay off employees. Mr. Musk has reduced the company’s work force by about 75 percent from the 7,500 employees it had at the time he took over. Last week, new layoffs affected dozens of workers, including engineers on advertising and staffers working on trust and safety, three people with knowledge of the cuts said. The Information earlier reported the layoffs.

This week, Mr. Musk, who also leads the electric automaker Tesla, emailed Twitter employees saying he was available for meetings after finishing “most of my Tesla work.” He reminded them that he must approve all product design and engineering changes “no matter how small,” according to a copy of the note, which was seen by The New York Times.

“We are going to agonize until we achieve as close to the perfect product as possible,” Mr. Musk wrote.

Samsung Galaxy A34 and A54 leak in official renders ahead of launch

While much of the attention thrown on Samsung in the past couple of months revolves around the upcoming Galaxy S23 flagships, Evan Blass shared official-looking renders of two unreleased Samsung Galaxy A-series phones. Based on a few hints, these should be the Galaxy A34 and Galaxy A54 - two of Samsung’s key phones heading into 2023 which should launch on January 18 in India. Both phones were featured in previous leaks so we have a solid idea on what to expect.

Galaxy A34 should bring nearly identical specs to its predecessor with a 6.5-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate and an Exynos 1280 chipset. The battery is expected to come in at 5,000 mAh and will support 25W charging while the camera department will be headline by a 48MP main shooter. The phone will likely boot Android 13 with One UI 5 on top and is expected to retain the IP67 water resistance.

Galaxy A54 is expected to bring a 6.6-inch FHD+ AMOLED with a 120Hz refresh rate and the yet-to-be-announced Exynos 1380 chipset. The phone will also feature a 50MP main camera, a 5,100 mAh battery with 25W charging and IP67 dust/water resistance.

Lato-Lato, or Ball Clackers, Banned from Bandung City Schools

The Bandung City education agency has issued a circular that restricts school students from bringing and playing with ball clackers or locally known as ‘lato-lato’, which has gained popularity among the Indonesian public.

"In order to prevent unwanted situations, the education agency has issued circular banning students from bringing toys that are unrelated to the academic process in schools," said Bandung City Education Agency Hikmat Ginanjar on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.

The entire academic ecosystem and students' parents are encouraged to collectively monitor the popularity of conventional and digital games among children.

Clackers acknowledged having positive values, however...

The ‘lato-lato’ is acknowledged to have a positive value for training children's motoric sensors skills. However, students are urged to play ball clackers outside of the school environment because it has no direct connection with the process of learning activities.

According to Bandung City Education Agency Secretary Tantan Surya Santana, ball clackers will only be banned from being played during school hours and within the academic ecosystem.

"[Clackers] should not disturb students’ studying process, both at home and in school. There shall not be any distractions. At schools, we have issued a circular to each and every education unit. We are not banning kids from owning lato-lato, but it’s just that the toys shall not be played with during school hours," said Santana in a statement.

Mengapa Berang-Berang Laut Berpegangan Tangan?

Hai, Ma! Kali ini aku mau menjawab pertanyaan Mama seputar Mengapa Berang-Berang Laut Berpegangan Tangan?

Sebenarnya aku baru tau sih kalo berang-berang laut itu suka pegangan tangan karena terdapat foto sepasang berang-berang yang tertangkap kamera lagi tidur. Menggemaskan banget kan ya? Hihi.

Tapi, Mengapa Berang-Berang Laut Berpegangan Tangan? Apa karena kedinginan ya? Nggak gitu, Ma.

Indonesia’s year of diplomatic triumph loses a little of its gloss

The G20 presidency in 2022 presented diplomatic and substantial challenges that threatened to blow the forum apart, or at least to semi-permanently incapacitate it. That Indonesia hosted a successful summit and passed leadership of the forum on to India in good working order was a diplomatic triumph for Indonesia’s leadership and significantly elevated the country’s standing on the global stage.

Despite its size and political weight — as the third-biggest democracy in the world, an emerging economy that is likely to be among the four biggest in the world within a few decades and its political leverage in Asia through ASEAN — few credited Indonesia with the capacity bring it off, in part a product of post-colonial prejudice, in part a product of ignorance about just where Indonesia is at in the world today.

Events were certainly stacked against a successful G20 summit last year. On top of the COVID-19 crisis, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sharply aggravated growing geopolitical tensions and the fragmentation of the world economy. The US trade and technology war with China signalled the acceleration of protectionism and international ‘decoupling’.

Recovery from the COVID-19 shock, the economic consequences of the Ukraine war, the steady deterioration of multilateral governance and the long-term spectre of climate change were all major challenges in their own right but, because they came at once and fed upon each other, needed vastly more effective global cooperation if they were to be managed with any measure of success.

The environment for international cooperation could not have been more toxic.

Without Indonesian convening power, it’s doubtful that there would have been a G20 summit at all in 2022.

That convening power derived from Indonesia’s status as a leader in the developing world, its central role in ASEAN and East Asia, its basic commitment to open, outward-looking development despite spasms of economic nationalism, its non-alignment to any of the big powers and its standing among world democracies. And Indonesia’s leadership team demonstrated that it had the mettle to wring every ounce of influence it could not just to hosting the meeting but delivering a credible measure of success.

The stakes were high. Not only was Indonesia’s emergent leadership role on the world stage on the line along with President Joko Widodo’s legacy, but also the viability of the G20 as a platform for coordinating the global economic recovery from the pandemic and managing global economic and other problems.

President Widodo and his ‘gang of four’ ministerial advisors from finance, trade, foreign affairs and the central bank made a huge political bet on the success of the G20 summit — knowing that failure would have been judged harshly by the Indonesian public, to whom the government had eagerly sold a success story in the lead up to the event, and by the international community, who would have delivered its own ruthless judgment on Indonesia’s frailties.

Jakarta’s gamble paid off: the G20 outperformed expectations, although the challenges facing global multilateralism remain. The Bali summit, against the odds, consolidated the G20’s self-designation as ‘the premier forum for global economic cooperation’.

Not only was Indonesia’s G20 high-wire G20 diplomacy a significant success in 2022, but its economy bounced back unexpectedly strongly from the pandemic. The World Bank predicts that the economy will enjoy a respectable annual GDP growth of 5.2 per cent for the full year.

But the Indonesian parliament’s enactment of a controversial new criminal code on 2 December revealed the jarring realities of domestic politics and took some of the shine off Indonesia’s year in the international sun.

As Liam Gammon explains in this week’s lead essay, ‘[t]he code satisfies a range of conservative agendas: from Islamists’ desire to police morality to the obsession of bureaucrats and nationalist politicians with protecting the “dignity” of the state and its officials.’

The flip side of Indonesia’s economic and geopolitical weight is that it also presents as part of a global trend of declining democratic quality. ‘A post-Jokowi reversal of regressive political trends doesn’t seem likely either’, notes Gammon. ‘Barring any radical constitutional change ahead of 2024, Indonesia’s democracy remains safe— albeit weaker and more illiberal, where dissent is anathematised and the rights of unpopular minorities, such as LGBT people, are subject to the whims of the majority.’ Contrary to some reporting, the new criminal code doesn’t explicitly ban same-sex relations but, with social conservatism on the front foot, such a ban could still come.

‘As Indonesia’s democracy displays its more illiberal face, the rhetoric of shared democratic values is a declining currency’, Gammon says.

As dismaying as these trends may appear, they should not distract from what’s at stake in engaging and backing up Indonesia’s emergent regional leadership role.

For Australia, where many see the country’s liberal democratic tradition as fundamental to its identity at home and on the world stage, the increasing congruence of its economic and strategic interests with those of Indonesia and its largely undemocratic neighbours in the region — in defending and husbanding a multilateral, open, rules-based economic order and resisting the entrenchment of cold war thinking and dynamics in Asia — is a reminder of the necessity for equanimity in the face of political realities Australian policymakers can’t change any time soon.

Such equanimity in the face of Indonesia’s conservative backsliding ought to inform how the bilateral relationship is framed politically in Australia. ‘Downplaying values and playing up interests doesn’t just mean interests in the sense of what Australia can achieve in Indonesia, commercially or otherwise’, says Gammon. ‘It means focusing instead on what Australia can achieve with Indonesia, as a fellow middle power with overlapping interests in respecting and reinforcing the rules of global trade and pursuing multilateral cooperation on transnational policy challenges’.

Indonesia, with all its foibles, is the Southeast Asian heavyweight and a global partner — as it proved so resoundingly in 2022 — with whom Australian leaders must now engage more than ever to forge a region that remains congenial to common economic, political and security interests.
